Get Going

Big thanks to Steve Weiss who sent me a big piece of inspiration this morning.

People often ask why I live in Utah, so far from my family and all that I grew up with. They wonder why I am so head-over-heels (sometimes literally) in love with skiing, climbing, mountain biking, etc. No matter how plainly I try to put it to them, I get one of two reactions:

A. staring as if I were the freakshow at an Arkansas carnival; or
B. glazing over while I gush on and on about what this lifestyle means to me.

It's changed my life. I thought I lived mighty fine before Utah; I had my dance teams and the beach and life was pretty sweet. But I never really challenged myself until I hit the West. Suddenly a world opened up to me that I had only seen in glimpses of magazine ads and stunts in movies. I never imagined real, everyday people did those things. I never imagined I'd be doing those things.

I am, and I'd never change it for a second. And since you may be beginning to do either A or B listed above, I'm gonna let someone else do the talking for me. Like I told Steve when he sent this to me:
This captures perfectly why we do what we do. It's not really a choice anymore, it's a need. It's what fuels life. Besides, who wants to sit when there's so much out there to do and see?

Enjoy.

  1. Love this comment from a viewer:

Alex, Ingrid, Conrad...these are world-class athletes. They are not as famous as those football players, but they work just as hard if not harder. They believe in what they do and they live their lives to the fullest. We should respect that.

  2. I would suggest a third reaction:

    C. Sit here in utter amazement and with marked jealousy, as I watch someone who is so passionate about their life share with the world the intense emotion that this lifestyle evokes.

    Just saying. :)

  4. Love it. I generally pull option A when watching these people do THIS stuff. Alex Honnold is awesome!

By the way the rope toss is my favorite part in the beginning of the montage, not sure why.

  5. Had one of these moments just the other day at the bird. It's nice to know some move here for the same reasons I did.
