PBJs

I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

I didn't always.

The Necessary Materials
(from bernews.com)

My twin brother loves them. He eats them every day, still, as an adult (sidenote: even though we're twins, I'm only a semi-adult. Just wanted to make sure we are clear on this). He still dunks them, like a cookie, right into a glass of cold milk, just as we did as kids. He has perfected the art of applying the peanut butter (all natural, the kind you have to mix) with the jelly (I think he experiments in this area) to a specific type of bread. He knows the precise measurements of thickness to apply on the peanut butter side and how much should be contrasting it on the jelly side.

He even has a special peanut butter mixing and spreading spatula.

Now that I am far away from my brother, I find myself reaching for peanut butter in the grocery store, picking out a tasty looking fruit accompaniment and slathering both on some home-made bread. And yes, I still dunk mine in milk.

I take pbjs skiing, hiking and camping. My boyfriend even switched out his chunky peanut butter for my beloved creamy (a big move) when making me sandwiches for our Valentine's Day climbing date. I considered it one of the sweetest gestures ever.

This childhood lunch has managed to stay with me through the years. I believe it is because I tie it in with someone who I love so much; because of the memories associated with it when we were still under the same roof and not 2500 miles away from each other. I've come to realize it's not so much that I love the taste of Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches (I don't like anything else peanut butter related) but more because of where the first memories of this sandwhich lie.

What little things have you kept with you since childhood? What meaning do they have to you?

  3. We love PB&Js here! Our favorite is to toast the bread first. It makes the peanut butter extra ooey gooey and the sandwich is an extra special treat. Best Sunday snack ever!

  5. ha ha... I love how this has turned into a voting for the sandwich. No one wants to share a childhood memory? Maybe Tuesdays are bad for them...

  7. +1 for PB&Js! I have been enjoying a Cookie Monster renaissance over the past few adult years, after I listened to an NPR interview with him and realized what a great role model he is. Things like this also help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj9Sv1JpmPs

  8. One of our favorite trails snacks is a Peanut Butter, Banana + Raisin Wrap. The wraps don't get squished as easily or explode squeezing out precious peanut butter on the sides of the plastic bag.

  9. Oh yes, I must agree your brother is correct. As a child I learned you opened a jar and had to carefully draw a picture of your favorite cartoon caracture's face on the smooth top. This could take an hour, but so be it - rules are rules. Next you never but never got peanut butter on the clean top edge of the bottle. As far as switching from crunchy to creamy even for a day, GRAB HIM and never let him go he is the prince charming for you. That is on the same level as switching from 2% milk to skim. wow. Isn't life great when we live in the moment!!!!

  11. This whole dunking thing leaves me a little perplexed. I ate P&J (as we called them in my house) everyday for many, many years and never once did my sandwich make its way into the milk. I guess I know what's for dinner tonight!

Chris is right about needing alternatives for the trail (sometimes) - I'm a huge fan of peanut butter and raisin sandwiches, the best part is they are even better when they get a little smashed, I do it on purpose when I eat them at home!

  12. Peanut butter and banana was Elvis' favorite sandwich. I'm a PB&J man myself, but I also don't have eight weeks' placement on the #1 spot of the charts, so maybe it's time to switch.

I'm enjoying the blog. Thumbs up.
